Assembly Voting wins big Belgian election contract

September 30, 2019

Press release: SD Worx partners with Assembly Voting

In Belgium, all companies are obliged by law to conduct ‘social elections’ every four years and SD Worx, a leading provider in Payroll and HR services, has chosen Danish Assembly Voting as extra tech partner to provide clients an optimised digital election process.

Digital election technology from the Danish software company Assembly Voting is set to play a key role when more than 7000 Belgian companies will hold ‘social elections’ in the spring of 2020. All companies with more than 50 employees are required by Belgian law to carry out elections appointing employee representatives for e.g. works councils and health and safety committees.

SD Worx has a long track record of helping Belgian companies carry out this formal procedure and will use a digital election system from Assembly Voting to conduct hundreds of simultaneous elections around the country that are continuously audited by both local unions and public authorities.

“Denmark is a global front-runner in local democracy and leveraging digitalisation to strengthen active citizenship,” says Matthias Jacxsens, Senior Legal Consultant at SD Worx.

“Assembly Voting has close to 20 years of experience supporting 3,500 statutory and non-statutory digital elections in Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland and recently also the UK. During these years, the company has provided secure and well proven voting technologies for a wide range of public and private clients, as well as methodologies and user interfaces to increase voter participation.”

The voting system is designed to comply with fundamental principles of conducting democratic elections. Documented technologies and data management processes serves to ensure eligibility, validated tallying and voter anonymity. E.g. use of encryption technology on the voter's device and irreversible separation of voterID and votes by mixing technology before generating the result maintain anonymity throughout the election process.

Experiences of the transformation process from paper-based elections to digital elections in e.g. Danish Labour Unions has demonstrated a significant increase in voter turnout. In some cases, the turnout has more than doubled as a consequence of introducing digital participation in democratic elections. Hence, in many Danish member-based organisations digital participation is perceived as an essential part of the democratic culture.

In Belgium, SD Worx has been supporting local companies since the emergence of ‘social elections’ with practical advice, electronic voting, training, postal voting, on-site consultancy on election day, dispute resolution assistance and more. The partnership with Assembly Voting will empower and add capability to help Belgian customers optimise the election process and digital experience even further.

“We are extremely proud that SD Worx have chosen to partner with us. The ‘social elections’ process in Belgium is a significant event in terms of size, importance, complexity and legal requirements and it underlines the maturity level of Assembly Voting’s technologies. It is also a recognition of our dedicated R&D focus on increasing voter participation,” says Jacob Banja Gyldenkærne, CEO in Assembly Voting.

Assembly Voting has a long track record of holding elections for ministries, municipalities, associations, parties, local councils, utility providers, pension funds, housing companies, etc. The company has conducted more than 3,500 elections across the Nordic region including Denmark, Norway, Sweden and Finland. Recently the company has also moved into the UK market.
